How to Organize a Bathroom with No Storage

A bathroom with no built-in storage — no vanity cabinet, no medicine cabinet, no linen closet — is a genuine design challenge. But it is a challenge that has been solved many times over, and the solutions are both practical and, in many cases, more attractive than the storage they replace.

Over-Toilet Shelving Units

A freestanding over-toilet shelving unit installs without any drilling or permanent modification and adds three to four shelves of storage space above the toilet tank — space that is otherwise completely wasted. These units range from simple metal etageres at $30 to solid wood structures with cabinet doors at $150. In a no-storage bathroom, this single piece can hold all your towels, toiletries, and cleaning supplies.

A Vanity Tray to Contain Countertop Items

Without under-sink cabinet storage, items end up scattered across the countertop. A vanity tray contains them — corralling your soap dispenser, hand lotion, and a small plant into a contained arrangement that looks intentional rather than cluttered. Anything that does not fit on the tray goes elsewhere, forcing the discipline that prevents counter creep.

Wall-Mounted Shelves

Two or three floating shelves on the wall beside the mirror or above the toilet hold everything from towels to candles to daily products. In a small bathroom without other storage, open shelves require you to keep only what is attractive or well-organized visible — which can actually result in a cleaner, more curated bathroom than one with ample closed storage.
