How to Organize a Small Kitchen
A small kitchen can feel chaotic and cramped, but with the right organization strategies it can function just as efficiently as a large one. The goal is to make every square inch count — storing things where you use them, eliminating what you do not need, and using vertical space that most kitchens waste.
Clear the Countertops First
The single most impactful thing you can do for a small kitchen is clear the countertops. Store everything that does not get used daily — the bread maker, the blender, the stand mixer — in a cabinet or pantry. Only your coffee maker and a knife block should live permanently on the counter. Open counter space makes a small kitchen feel dramatically larger and makes cooking far more enjoyable.
Use the Inside of Cabinet Doors
The inside of cabinet doors is prime real estate that most kitchens completely ignore. Command-style hooks and tension rod organizers mounted inside cabinet doors can hold pot lids, cleaning supplies, foil and wrap boxes, and small tools. This frees up the main cabinet space for the items that are harder to store vertically.
Stack Up, Not Out
In a small kitchen, vertical storage is essential. Stack dishes, use risers to create multiple levels inside cabinets, and consider open shelving on walls that do not have existing cabinets. A pegboard above the counter or stove holds pots, pans, and utensils while keeping them accessible and off the counter.
