How to Choose the Right Bathroom Vanity
The bathroom vanity is the centerpiece of most bathrooms — it determines both the aesthetic and the function of the space. Choosing the right vanity means balancing size, style, storage needs, and budget. Getting it wrong is expensive to fix, so it is worth spending time on this decision before making a purchase.
Measure Before You Shop
The first rule is to know your space precisely. Measure the width of the area where the vanity will go, the distance from the wall to any obstruction, the height of existing plumbing rough-ins, and the ceiling height. Standard vanity heights are 32 to 36 inches, with comfort-height models at 36 inches becoming increasingly popular because they feel more like a kitchen counter and reduce back strain.
Single vs. Double Sink
A double sink requires at least 60 inches of vanity width to function comfortably. In a bathroom smaller than that, a single sink almost always functions better — the extra counter space on a single-sink vanity is more valuable than a second sink that forces both users to stand too close together. For couples sharing a bathroom, the counter space beside a single sink is more useful than most people expect.
Freestanding vs. Floating
Floating vanities look contemporary, show the floor which makes the room feel larger, and make floor cleaning easier. Traditional floor-standing vanities often provide more storage and are easier to install. For a small bathroom, the visual benefit of a floating vanity is usually worth the slight complexity of installation.
