How to Create a Cozy Reading Nook in the Bedroom
A reading nook in the bedroom is one of those features that, once you have it, feels essential. It creates a physical separation between the sleeping zone and a quiet, comfortable place to read — which is actually better for sleep hygiene than reading in bed, because it keeps the bed associated only with sleep. Any bedroom with an unused corner can accommodate a reading nook.
The Chair Is Everything
The reading chair is the centerpiece of the nook and must be genuinely comfortable for extended reading. A small armchair with a low, deep seat and armrests that support a book is ideal. A wingback chair provides a sense of enclosure. A rounded accent chair adds sculptural interest. Whatever style you choose, sit in it for several minutes in the store before purchasing — reading comfort is not something to guess at.
A Floor Lamp at Exactly the Right Height
Reading light must fall over the shoulder and onto the page without shining in the eyes. An adjustable arc floor lamp positioned to the left or right of the chair (depending on your dominant hand) with the head positioned slightly above eye level is the most functional arrangement. A 3000K bulb provides warm light that does not strain the eyes.
Make It Feel Like Its Own World
Even a small reading nook becomes special when it has a sense of enclosure and identity separate from the rest of the bedroom. A small area rug defines the zone. A curtain hung from the ceiling that can be drawn around the chair creates a semi-private cocoon. A small side table holds tea, a bookmark, and whatever is being read.
