Budget Renovation Mistakes to Avoid

A home renovation that goes over budget is almost inevitable, but some renovations go catastrophically over budget due to avoidable mistakes. Whether you are tackling your first bathroom update or a whole-house project, understanding these common errors before you start can save you thousands of dollars and weeks of stress.

Not Getting Multiple Quotes

The first quote for any contractor-performed work should never be the only quote. The variation between contractors for identical work can be extraordinary — sometimes 50 to 100 percent. Get at least three quotes for any work over $500 and make sure all quotes cover identical scope so you are comparing equivalent work.

Underestimating Demo Surprises

Demolition almost always reveals surprises: plumbing that is not where you expected, electrical wiring that does not meet code, mold behind the walls, structural issues hidden under the surface. Experienced renovators budget an additional 10 to 20 percent specifically for demo discoveries. If you do not use it, that is a bonus; if you do, you are not caught off guard.

Buying Materials Before You Have Accurate Measurements

Ordering flooring, tile, or lumber before you have precise measurements — accounting for waste, cuts, and pattern matching — leads to either running short mid-project or having significant expensive leftovers. Tile cuts waste 10 to 15 percent. Hardwood flooring needs 7 to 10 percent overage. Always add the appropriate waste factor before ordering.
